U.S. Rep. Fred Upton, a Republican, will face a challenger in his re-election bid next year.

Paul Clements, a political science professor at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, plans to vie for the post as a Democrat and formally announces his candidacy on Nov. 9, he said in a press release Tuesday, Oct. 29. He’ll appear at the Cass County Democratic Headquarters building, 804 E. State St., Cassopolis, from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Nov. 9 and also conduct a “whistlestop tour” around the southwestern Michigan House district the same day.

“All are welcome to come and meet Paul, hear his platform, ask questions and get to know the candidate,” said Clements’ press release. “An informal brunch will be served.”

Among Clements’ top areas of concern are manufacturing and jobs, education and the environment. More information on the candidate is on his website, www.clementsforcongress.com.

Upton, first elected in 1986, plans to seek re-election.
