ELKHART — Ticket sales from the Purdue Varsity Glee Club performance at The Lerner Theatre this weekend will help support a scholarship program for local students. Each year, the Purdue Club of Elkhart County awards between $15,000 and $20,000 to students from Elkhart County who attend Purdue University. Part of those funds comes from the annual Glee Club performance in Elkhart County.

Preston Reddell, a 2013 graduate of Fairfield High School, received a scholarship from the Purdue Club of Elkhart County this year, and he will be performing with the Glee Club in Elkhart this weekend. Here’s what he had to say recently about his involvement in the group.

Q: How did you get involved in the Purdue Varsity Glee Club?

A: “I’ve been involved in choir and things like that since I was in fifth grade. I joined Indiana All-State Choir my senior year in high school, which is kids from all around the state. Then, I got emails asking me to try out for the Purdue Glee Club.”

Q: Why did you want to audition for the Club?

A: “I was really excited about the possibility of getting to sing in college. I knew that I needed to audition for (the glee club), whether I got in or not.”

Q: What do you like about singing in the group?

A: “It’s an all-male group, and right now there are about 60 members. The singing style is a lot different (than singing in high school). We go for more of a barbershop sound. It’s a lot harder and more difficult, but it’s a lot more fun. Some of the members you see only at practice, and you spend so much time with them that they kind of become your brothers.”

Q: What would you tell someone who is considering going to the show this weekend?

A: “I would tell them that you’ve probably never seen anything like a glee club show, and it’s an experience that you’re not going to want to miss. All of our sounds are fantastic. We really sing just about anything — we have pop medleys, we’ve got classical music, religious music — we have just about any type of music you can think of.”
