MILLERSBURG — A fire at a house displaced the family and caused heavy damage to the contents inside.

The blaze was called in around 2:15 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, and ended up causing smoke or fire damage to each room in the dwelling, said Rich Hackel, chief of the Clinton Township Fire Department. He said no one was injured, but the damage forced the family out and the Elkhart County Red Cross was called in to help them find a place to live.

Hackel, speaking around 4:30 p.m. Saturday after the fire was extinguished, didn’t have the name of the family living in the home in the 100 block of North Sherman Street. But he said they had been renting.

It’s not clear what caused the fire or where in the home it started, Hackel said, and the formal investigation hadn’t yet started.

Structurally, the home is still sound, the chief said, though much of the contents seem to have sustained damage.

Around 20 firefighters helped fight the blaze, from the Clinton, Elkhart and Benton township fire departments.
