GOSHEN — A narrow two-lane bridge on C.R. 4 that crosses over Christiana Creek north of Elkhart will be replaced next spring with a wider structure.
The Elkhart County commissioners have signed a contract with the Indiana Department of Transportation for the $1 million bridge improvement project. INDOT will cover 80 percent of the cost, and the county will be responsible for paying the rest, according to the agreement. The county’s highway department will manage the design of the bridge.
County bridge engineer Tom Rushlow said the construction will include a replacement of the existing bridge and substructure. The new bridge will feature two lanes and 6-foot sidewalks plus 8-foot-wide shoulders on each side. In 2011, about 12,000 vehicles per day traveled over the bridge, Rushlow said.
Rushlow said the project will be bid through the state highway department, and work could begin as early as May 2014. A project of this size usually takes about four to five months to complete, he estimated.
