Posted on Sept. 30, 2013 at 1:00 a.m.

Elkhart County’s monthly collection of household hazardous waste is scheduled for 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5.

The county’s solid waste management district is sponsoring the event this weekend at the Elkhart County jail near the intersection of C.R. 7 and C.R. 26.

Acceptable waste includes oil based paints, motor oil, gasoline, pesticides, medications and household cleaners. If possible, materials should be in their original, labeled containers. Containers larger than 5 gallons, electronics, tires, refrigerators and dehumidifiers will not be accepted. Contact the solid waste management district office for recycling information.

Latex paint and alkaline batteries are no longer accepted at the collection event. Latex paint can be dried by opening the can and adding cat litter, shredded newspaper or other absorbents to speed up the process. Empty cans and alkaline batteries can be thrown away with regular trash.

The next household hazardous waste collection will be Nov. 2.

For more information, call the solid waste management district office at 293-2269.
