Teen’s battle with cancer takes a dire turn

The family of Sarah Crane, the Elkhart teen who is battling cancer, received a dire diagnosis this week.

ELKHART — A teenager whose battle with cancer has resulted in a huge outpouring of community support received a dire diagnosis this week.

Sarah Crane and her family learned Monday that medical treatment has not gone well and that the cancer, which started this summer in her colon, has spread to other organs.

In a post on a Facebook page dedicated to Sarah’s cause, her father, Dean Crane, wrote that doctors have determined that the condition is now viewed as “inoperable, untreatable and terminal.”

Her father said they believe she has a very short time to live.

Despite the prognosis, Sarah’s father said she continues to fight.

Sarah has requested to continue treatments and is steadfast on fighting this disease, her father wrote.

“I believe in Jesus and I am not afraid to die. However, I am not ready to give up and I AM BEATING THIS,” Sarah was quoted by her father on Facebook.

More than 3,000 people are following Sarah’s plight on the Facebook page, and more than 460 people shared her father’s update since it was posted late Wednesday afternoon.

Numerous fundraisers, including a sale of shirts emblazoned with the phrase “Sarah Strong,” are ongoing. These include an event Thursday, Sept. 26, at Memorial High School, where she’s a student, and Friday, Sept. 27, at Martin’s Super Market on Nappanee Street in Elkhart.
