ELKHART — The second rendition of Elkhart’s Rock The Block looks to be bigger and a bit more polished.

The city of Elkhart and LaCasa Inc., are teaming up for another Rock The Block neighborhood clean-up project. This one is set for Saturday, Oct. 5.

As was the case at the June 8 event, the city and LaCasa will seek a large group of volunteers to make a concentrated effort to clean up a designated neighborhood.

The city of Elkhart will provide assistance from several departments.

Among the priorities: Removal of brush and weeds and some painting.

This time, volunteers will focus on an area bounded by Indiana Avenue, Prairie, Eden and Kinzy streets on the city’s south side.

That area is just northeast of the First Rock the Block effort that happened in June.

Jason Moreno, community organizer with LaCasa, said they learned a few things from the first event that that should make next month’s event a little smoother.

Organizers will allow for an hour of volunteer registration from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. and crews will have a specific assignments, Moreno said.

Wristbands will be distributed to volunteers to ensure those who are working are the ones who receive free food and drink.

Volunteers are being sought to work from about 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Organizers also hope to paint the storefronts of six businesses on Indiana Avenue to help establish a cohesive appearance, Moreno said.

In addition to sprucing up the six businesses, the event will also focus on 24 residential properties.

“We had 60 volunteers for the first one and we want 100 volunteers for the second one,” Moreno said. “We’ll need 100 for the second one.”

Moreno and numerous city officials toured the target area Friday in preparation of the event.

“We feel great about how it’s trending. I just need to make sure we get enough response.
