Area contractors submit competitive offers for C.R. 17 construction

    Five companies have submitted offers to extend C.R. 17 farther south.

    GOSHEN — Five companies are competing to win contracts with Elkhart County to extend C.R. 17 farther south.

    The Elkhart County commissioners began accepting offers from contractors Aug. 23 and opened the bids Monday, Sept. 16, for the construction of a new two-lane road on C.R. 17 stretching from C.R. 38 to C.R. 40 southwest of Goshen.

    The lowest bid for the construction project came from Phend & Brown Inc. of Milford. The company offered to do the work for $1,516,108. Niblock Excavating Inc. of Bristol submitted a bid for $1,524,983. Walsh & Kelly Inc., headquartered in Griffith, proposed a bid of $1,668,002. Rieth-Riley, based in Goshen, included a bid of $1,772,747. The highest bid came from C & E Excavating Inc. in Elkhart for $1,903,139.

    The Elkhart County Highway Department will review the five bids and present a recommendation to the commissioners within a couple of weeks. The road improvement project is expected to begin Oct. 1 and finish by Aug. 27, 2014, according to a notice to bidders.
