Bicyclist succumbs to injuries

A bicyclist who was struck by an SUV on Thursday, Sept. 5 has died.

GOSHEN — A Goshen man who was struck by an SUV while riding his bicycle last week has died from his injuries.

Dale Ewers, 38, died at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, at Memorial Hospital in South Bend, said Capt. Jim Bradberry of the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department.

Ewers was riding his bicycle east on a bike path west of C.R. 127, north of C.R. 28 just before 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 5. He started to cross C.R. 127, getting in the path of a sport-utility vehicle driven by Milton Bontrager, 68, of Louisville, Ky., who was driving south.

Ewers was taken to Memorial Hospital with injuries to his head and a fractured left leg. Bontrager was not injured as a result of the crash.

No citations were issued at the scene and the crash is still under investigation, Bradberry said.
