What you need to know to work at or vote in the Nov. 5 Goshen special election

GOSHEN — Here’s what you need to know to vote in the special election Nov. 5.

The special election is open to registered voters in precincts Elkhart 1 through Elkhart 21, comprising all of the Goshen Community Schools district, according to information from the Elkhart County Election Board. No other voters are eligible.

Voter registration for the 2013 special election will end at the close of business Monday, Oct. 7. Absentee voting in person for the election will begin at 8 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, and end at noon, Monday, Nov. 4.

Voters will need to show a photo ID that displays the voter’s photo, name, an expiration date that is current or expired after Nov. 6, 2012, and is issued either by the state of Indiana or the federal government.

In most cases, according to the election board, an Indiana driver’s license, Indiana photo ID card, military ID or U.S. passport is sufficient.

Absentee voting will be at the County Administration Building in Goshen, 117 N. Second St., Room 108. Hours are:

Ÿ Mondays, except Nov. 4, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Ÿ Tuesday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Ÿ Saturday, Oct. 26, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Ÿ Saturday, Nov. 2, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Ÿ Monday, Nov. 4, from 8 a.m. to noon

The election board is also seeking poll workers for the special election.

People interested in working the polls should contact the Republican or Democrat Party. To contact the Democrat Party call Shari Mellin at 262-4213. To contact the Republican Party call Shirley Snyder at 238-5657.

Poll workers must attend and sign in at a training session and work the full day of the special election to receive an allowance.

Per County Ordinance 98-233:

Ÿ Inspectors receive $110 plus $10 food allowance and $10 for attending training

Ÿ Democrat judges receive $70 plus $10 food allowance and $10 for attending training

Ÿ Republican judges receive $65 plus $10 food allowance and $10 for attending training

Ÿ Clerks receive $65 plus $10 food allowance and $10 for attending training.

Trainings for inspectors and judges will be at the County Office Building, 117 N. Second St., Room 104, Goshen, on the following days:

Ÿ Tuesday, Oct. 22, at 2 p.m.

Ÿ Tuesday, Oct. 22, at 6 p.m.

Ÿ Wednesday, Oct. 30, at 2 p.m.

Ÿ Wednesday, Oct. 30, at 6 p.m.

Trainings for clerks will be at the Public Service Building, 4230 Elkhart Road, Goshen, on the following days:

Ÿ Tuesday, Oct. 22, at 2 p.m.

Ÿ Wednesday, Oct. 23, at 6 p.m.

Ÿ Wednesday, Oct. 30, at 6 p.m.
