ELKHART — Shoppers at the Walmart store on Old U.S. 20 got a shock Tuesday when the store went into lockdown for a possible kidnapping case.

The store was locked down shortly after 4 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 27. An Elkhart County emergency dispatcher said a woman who had reported her 10-month-old child missing on Monday, Aug. 26, in St. Joseph County received information Tuesday that the alleged abductor and the child may be in the store at 30830 Old U.S. 20, which is at the county line.

The store, following company procedure, locked down the building and the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department was contacted.

Sheriff’s Capt. Jim Bradberry said the case appeared to be an interference of custody case rather than a kidnapping and that the child was unharmed.
