Culver Duck Farms named Agri-Business of the Year
MIDDLEBURY — Culver Duck is the winner of the 2013 Agri-Business Award of Excellence from the Elkhart County Agricultural Society.
Culver Duck Farms Inc., of Middlebury, is a fifth-generation family duck operation, and is the second-largest duck producer in the U.S.
It has been at its present location on 500 acres north of Middlebury since 1977, and earlier this year it hosted Gov. Mike Pence’s roundtable discussion with local agriculture leaders.
Herbert Culver is president and leads the company with his son, Burt Culver.
Culver Duck has breeding flocks and contracts with 100 area farms in the duck-growing operation.
It produces more than 5 million ducks a year and goes through about 50,000 tons of feed.
It also recently added its own power plant, run by breaking down leftover duck parts from its processing operation.
Culver Duck has 40 acres of corn being raised and is part of the Seed to Feed program with crop proceeds donated to Church Community Services and area food pantries.
