ELKHART — A vigil of remembrance will be held Monday evening, Aug. 19, to mark one year since 7-year-old Kristyana Jackson died after a home invasion.

Three men tried to enter the Jackson family home as Kristyana and her mother, Kimi, returned home from a high school football game on the night of Aug. 17, 2012. The men shot John Jackson, Kristyana’s father, in the arm and back. Kristyana was shot in head and died from her wounds two days later at Memorial Hospital in South Bend.

Kristyana’s aunt organized Monday’s ceremony, which will be held at the Jacksons’ home, 720 Kilbourn St.

Kimi Jackson said her sister planned the vigil as a way to remember Kristyana a year after her death. Jackson said that everyone is welcome.

“We’ll just be getting together and reflecting on my baby’s life,” she said.

Jackson said they will also release balloons and said they’d like people to bring written memories of Kristyana. The family plans to compile the memories for Kristyana’s brother, John Jr., to read as he gets older.

The vigil will begin at 7 p.m. Monday.
