BRISTOL — About 230 people went Racin’ for Jason Owens Sunday.

Jason Owens has a rare disease which causes non-malignant brain tumors. Over the years he has lost his hearing and mobility. His wife, Melanie, is a first-grade teacher at Middlebury Elementary. They have two children, Taylor and Austin.

The event included a 5K run, a fun walk, a silent auction and a bake sale, sponsored by the Bristol United Methodist Church.

“It’s been amazing how the details have come together for this,” said Bristol UMC children’s director, Becky Goodman. “Jason knows we care, and that’s the main goal.”

“I came because someone from our church needs help,” said Ruth Saupe. She walked in the one mile Fun Walk.

Lucas Hauenstein, age 9, doesn’t go to the church. He came to be in the 5K. “I like running, and I like helping people,” Lucas said.

At the beginning of the race, a letter was read that was written by Jason’s wife, Melanie, thanking those from church, school, friends, family and community members who came out.

The day raised $10,589 for the Owens family.

“We did this to take away some of the financial burden they have, and to show the family love and how supported they are,” said race coordinator Lesli Mellinger.

Donations can still be made by sending a check to the Bristol United Methodist Church with “Racin’ for Jason” in the memo line. The address is: Bristol United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 275, Bristol, IN 46507.
