Elkhart bomb unit recovers suspicious item, to destroty it

ELKHART — Authorities recovered a suspicious item found near an Elkhart County business and the Elkhart Police Department bomb unit will be destroying it.

The Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department received a report at 8:11 a.m. Tuesday, July 30 about an item along Adams Street, near Lami Plast, a business at 25750 Woodlawn Ave., just outside the Elkhart city limits. It “appears to have been a homemade firework,” the sheriff’s department said in a press release, citing Elkhart police authorities. It was wrapped in clear nylon packaging tape with a fuse attached to it.

The bomb unit responded, collecting the item and will destroy it. The closest building was vacant at the time, according to the press release.
