When Anna Bailey turned 7 last year, the birthday presents she received were redundant.
“She’s totally into princess and pink,” Andrea Bailey, Anna’s mother, said. “But she got stuff she’d already gotten.”
So this July when Anna turned 8, Andrea proposed a different idea for her birthday party. She asked Anna if she’d want her friends to donate to a charity instead.
“Anna said, ‘Okay, we can give to the Humane Society,’” Andrea said.
Andrea said her family has adopted pets from the Humane Society and donated to the organization in the past.
When her friends came for her birthday party, they brought donations and bags of dog food in lieu of traditional gifts.
The final product was $130 and five large bags of dog food, Andrea said. The family donated the collection to the Humane Society in Elkhart on Saturday, July 27.
Andrea said she was “surprised” by the nice collection the party gathered.
“People really opened up and seemed to be into it,” she said.
Andrea said Anna’s party even inspired one of her friends to do the same for his birthday.
Anna, who will be in the second grade at Cleveland Elementary School in Elkhart, enjoys roller skating, gymnastics and dance.
Her dream job lines up appropriately with her birthday donations — she wants to be a veterinarian to large animals, Andrea said.
The Baileys live in Elkhart.
