Marriage proposal tops off opening night of Premier Arts’ ‘South Pacific’

ELKHART — The opening performance for Premier Arts’ “South Pacific” at the Lerner Theatre had an extra musical number Friday night.

After curtain call, the cast helped Tanner Smale, who plays Lt. Joseph Cable in the production, propose to his girlfriend Kaitlyn Robison.

As the cast took their bows on Friday, July 19, the music stopped abruptly with a record scratch, and the cast broke into a choreographed dance to One Direction’s “Kiss You.”

Smale, who had slipped offstage, returned wearing a suit and accompanied by confetti cannons.

The ensemble formed a circle, each member holding red paper hearts that spelled “Will you marry me?”

Smale, still wearing his microphone from the performance, hopped off the front of the stage and knelt on one knee in front of Robison, who had been sitting front-row center.

“Girls like you simply do not exist,” he said. “God put you in my life for a reason.”

He said he didn’t know what the reason was, but he wanted to spend the rest of his life figuring it out.

“Kaitlyn Elise Robison,” he said slowly, pausing after each word. “Will you marry me?”

She said yes.
