GOSHEN — The Goshen Board of School Trustees on Wednesday evening appointed Roger Nafziger to fill vacancy after one board member announced he is moving out of the district.

Nafziger replaces Jon Jesse, whose term is set to end on December 31, 2014.

He was one of seven candidates interviewed by the board on July 1. Jesse resigned in June after 11 years on the board.

“I think it was a really strong field (of applicants) and I was a bit surprised when I got the call and they said I was chosen,” he said.

Nafziger has a bachelor’s degree in music education and a master’s degree in education administration. He is a former music teacher with the Wa-Nee Community School Corporation and has served on the board for the United Way of Elkhart County and the Goshen Board of Zoning Appeals.

Nafziger is currently the Director of Gift Planning for Goshen College

He said he has lived in Goshen for 40 years and all three of his children attended Goshen Community Schools.

“I care deeply for Goshen Community Schools,” he said. “I’ve appreciated the schools a lot.”

As a member of the board, he hopes to help the school corporation overcome the challenges it faces as a result of funding cuts.

“I do see that as our biggest challenge,” Nafziger said. “I hope I can help advocate for public schools and make a little bit of a difference.”
