Traffic shifts begin Monday as S.R. 19 construction continues
ELKHART — Traffic patterns on S.R. 19 in Elkhart will change beginning early next week.
Vehicles driving on S.R. 19 are currently restricted to a single lane in each direction between Franklin Street and the St. Joseph River using lanes on the east side of the road. The Indiana Department of Transportation’s contractor for the road construction project in that area will start shifting traffic Monday, July 8, to the newly built temporary pavement on the east side of S.R. 19 between Lusher Avenue and Franklin. The move will allow the contractor to begin construction on the west side of the road.
The contractor is expected to open Indiana Avenue on Monday west of S.R. 19. Once the road is open, Pennsylvania Avenue west of S.R. 19 will close at the intersection for paving on the west side of S.R. 19.
Work on the east side of the St. Joseph River bridge is expected to wrap up later during the week. Traffic will move to the east side of the roadway over the bridge to allow a crew to work on the west side of the bridge. Once the traffic pattern changes on the bridge, all vehicles traveling on S.R. 19 will use the east side of the road, with traffic restricted to one lane in each direction between Lusher and the north side of the river.
All roadwork and traffic changes are weather permitting.
