ELKHART — A driver took off running after causing a head-on collision south of downtown Elkhart around 4:45 p.m. Thursday, July 4.

A dark blue Chevy Blazer headed west on Indiana Avenue crossed two lanes of traffic and crashed into a car that was stopped at a red light on Indiana Avenue at Main Street near the Ambassadors for Christ Church, according to Elkhart police. The force of the collision pushed the car driven by Todd Wainwright, of Elkhart, back more than 50 feet from where his vehicle was stopped. A male driver got out of the Blazer and ran south.

“He didn’t stop,” said Chris Nelson, a passenger in Wainwright’s car. “He came barreling through. It was scary, really scary. It was just so fast. It was such a quick flash with the airbags and everything. I’m just glad we’re OK.”

There was heavy front-end damage to both vehicles. A female passenger in the Blazer was taken to Elkhart General Hospital with minor injuries.

Elkhart police are investigating the crash.
