GOSHEN — The Goshen School Board interviewed potential future board members Monday afternoon, July 1, as a step toward filling an at-large seat vacated last month by Jon Jesse.

The board had been anticipating eight interviews, but one candidate withdrew from the process. The board will consider a vote on who to bring on to the board at its July 10 meeting.

The board sat down to interview the following seven applicants:

Ÿ Craig Harris, builder

Ÿ Rick Holderread, insurance agent

Ÿ Roger Nafziger, director of gift planning at Goshen College

Ÿ Bill Rieth, president and CEO of United Way

Ÿ Keith Goodman, commercial banker

Ÿ Brad Miller, owner of AllPro Sales

Ÿ Dr. Gene Stutsman, local dentist

Goshen School Board members Jane Troup, Dan West and Catherine Cripe interviewed the seven men, asking what they see as the most pressing issue facing Goshen Community Schools, experience on other boards and how they work through disagreements.

Because Jesse’s resignation came partway through his term, whoever the school board appoints and approves to the seat will serve a year and a half and will be eligible to run for re-election as the term comes to a close.

The school board is responsible for the hiring and firing of a school system’s superintendent, setting policies and approving the district budget and the distribution of funds.

The Goshen School Board’s next meeting, when the board is set to vote on who will fill the vacant seat, will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 10, at the Goshen Administration Center, 613 E. Purl St., Goshen.
