GOSHEN — A group of Christians in the Goshen area is inviting supporters of gay marriage equality to a Christian worship service Wednesday night celebrating the Supreme Court decisions on the Defense of Marriage Act and Proposition 8.
On Wednesday, June 26, the Supreme Court ruled that the Defense of Marriage Act is unconstitutional and held that supporters of a gay-marriage ban in California called Proposition 8 did not have the right to appeal the lower courts ruling against the ban.
The ad-hoc group plans to gather at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Assembly Mennonite Church, 1201 S. 11th St., Goshen.
They will “celebrate the transformative work of God’s Spirit, recognize the milestone in our culture of this U.S. Supreme Court case, and provide a witness that to be Christian and to believe God loves all people as they were created are not incompatible,” according to a press release.
All supporters of marriage equality are invited, according to the release, and the event is not connected with a specific congregation or denomination. Attendees are asked to enter the church through the south doors.
