ELKHART — Theatre provides the opportunity for individuals to stand in the spotlight, but Doloris Cogan would prefer to shine that light on others.
To do so, Cogan provided the necessary funding for a summer theatre series that began last year: www.elkharttruth.com/article/20120807/NEWS01/708079930/-1/.
The second annual Doloris C. Cogan IU South Bend Summer Series opens June 13, boasting four fully staged theatre productions.
Performed at the Lerner Theatre, 410 S. Main St., the series was gifted by Cogan in an effort to bring IUSB, the theatre and Elkhart residents together to enjoy the arts.
“I’m just happy to be able to still participate in the arts, and I think that it should be a part of everyone’s life,” said Cogan.
A former Miles Laboratory employee active in community affairs and neighborhood activities, Cogan gives a great deal of credit to theatre.
“I really believe in the theatre, and I go to a lot of theatre,” said Cogan. “I think that every child should have the chance to be on stage or be akin to a performance. It builds confidence.”
Attending shows when she can, Cogan attributes her donation to more than just the confidence that theatre can build.
“I decided, I can’t take it with me, so I would donate it to IUSB for student development,” said Cogan.
