BZA to review request for racetrack in north part of Elkhart County
ELKHART — A resident in the northern part of Elkhart County who has been training horses for seven years has applied for a permit to add a racetrack to a property near the Michigan border.
The Elkhart County Board of Zoning Appeals will hold a public hearing on the request at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 16. The property, which covers 25 acres, is located at 50739 C.R. 11 in Elkhart south of State Line Road. The land already includes track with a horse barn and a house, according to paperwork submitted the county’s planning and zoning department.
The request was submitted by property owner Sujely Borjas, along with the Macrino and Juana Vazquez Revocable Trust.
The property has an existing special use permit to house up to five horses, 15 cattle, 10 goats and 10 chickens on the land. Borjas wants to amend the permit to allow a privately owned business for racing and training horses. Borjas’ application indicates that the business would be open one or two Saturdays a month from April to October.
