ELKHART — The sixth annual Flags from the Heart event will benefit the Elkhart Lions Club, organizers said.

The project has filled Central Park in downtown Elkhart with flags to honor veterans since 2008 and all profits went back into the program, said organizer Brian Thomas.

Last year’s event set a record of 200 flags in the park and “we’re on track for 200-plus this year so far,” Thomas said.

The three-foot by five-foot flags will be displayed in Central Park from 4 p.m. on May 24 until 6 p.m. on May 26, and each will include a personal dedication.

Flags are $25 for an American flag or $30 for an Indiana flag. Flags from the Heart flags from previous years can be displayed for $15.

Order forms are available at flagsfromtheheart.org and should be returned to 127 N. Main St., Elkhart, by May 20. Checks can be made out to the Elkhart Lions Club.

Flags should be picked up by 5 p.m. on May 27 unless other arrangements have been made.

Tentative plans for the Memorial Day weekend in Central Park include a flag-raising ceremony at 11 a.m. on May 25 followed by a rendition of “Echo Taps” at noon. A flag retirement ceremony will be held at 12 p.m. on May 26 with Boy Scout Troop 87.
