Monthly household hazardous waste collection this weekend
ELKHART — Elkhart County residents can drop off household hazardous waste at a collection event this weekend at the county jail near C.R. 7 and C.R. 26.
The collection site will be open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 4. The monthly event is sponsored by Elkhart County’s solid waste management district.
Waste accepted at the collection site includes oil-based paints, motor oil, gasoline, pesticides, medications and household cleaners. If possible, materials should be in their original, labeled containers. Containers larger than five gallons will not be accepted.
Other items that will not be accepted include electronics, tires, refrigerators and dehumidifiers. Contact the solid waste management district office at 293-2269 for recycling information on those items.
Latex paint and alkaline batteries are also not accepted at the collection site. Latex paint can be dried by opening the can and adding cat litter, sand, shredded newspaper or other absorbents to speed up the process. Empty paint cans, as well as alkaline batteries, can be thrown away with regular trash. Neither is considered hazardous waste.
The next household hazardous waste collection will be June 1.
