ELKHART — The Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department issued a press release clarifying its standby policy Thursday, April 25.

In the press release, the sheriff’s department explained it conducts standbys when a court has ordered one on safety concerns related to violence and the retrieval of property. Without a court order, the sheriff’s department does not conduct standbys for several reasons, such as not knowing whether the person requesting the standby is allowed to be in the property.

The only exception to the no-standby policy is if it is needed during an ongoing sheriff’s department investigation.

The press release was sent out in reference to the arrest of Patrolman William Long, 37, of Elkhart, Tuesday night.

According to the press release from the sheriff’s department, Long had a protective order preventing him from going into a residence at which he kicked the front door to get in and gather some of his personal items.

The press release states the sheriff’s department will review information from the investigation the Indiana State Police is conducting.
