Elkhart $SUBT_ON$Local groups receive awards for cutting down air pollution$SUBT_OFF$

ELKHART — Four area groups recently received awards for their efforts to clean up air in the region.

The Michiana Area Council of Governments (MACOG) handed out awards during its annual Clean Air Awards luncheon on Tuesday, April 23.

Elkhart Community Schools was recognized for efforts to reduce energy consumption and indirectly reduce emissions associated with energy production. Friends of Granger Paths received an award for seeking funding for a bicycle and pedestrian network in the Granger area. This network would reduce emissions from vehicles.

Janet McCabe, deputy assistant administrator in the United States Environmental Protection Agency Office of Air and Radiation, was recognized for her commitment to improve air quality in Indiana and the U.S. The St. Joseph County Regional Sewer and Water District received an award for supporting wind energy to increase efficient sewage disposal for residents of Wyatt.

MACOG gives these awards each year to recognize local anti-pollution efforts.
