Nappanee woman hopes to win ‘Hair Wars’

NAPPANEE — An Elkhart County hair stylist will get a chance to display her skills next weekend at the Hair Wars hair show in Detroit.

Amy Hochstetler hopes to one day see her hairstyles heading down the runway at major fashion shows and said the show is an opportunity for her to show off her avant-garde style and get a foot in the door of the competitive business.

Hochstetler is a student at the Regency Beauty Institute in South Bend and plans to graduate in July.

“I did one style in class and the educator suggested I search for competitions to see if I could be a foot in the door to be a stylist,” she said.

Hochstetler found the Hair Wars show and decided it would be a great place to showcase her skills. Another stylist dropped out of the lineup and organizers invited Hochstetler to participate.

She has been preparing for the show for about a month, selecting models, practicing the hairstyles and makeup she will use on them for the show, and ordering their costumes.

After graduating from Regency, Hochstetler said she hopes to continue participating in hair shows and find a job at a salon.
