Ivy Tech locked down briefly
ELKHART — Students and staff at Ivy Tech’s Elkhart campus were told to lock classroom doors and take cover Wednesday afternoon after school officials learned of a threat to the school.
The lockdown began around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, and was lifted about half an hour later.
Capt. Jim Bradberry of the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department said the department had already investigated the threat.
“They were acting on information that was old,” he said. “We had already looked into it. We had spoken to the individual and found no credible evidence to what was said.”
Bradberry declined to specify what sort of threat was made against the school, but said someone at the Ivy Tech South Bend campus “threatened to do harm” to people at the Elkhart campus.
“There is no danger to the school now,” Bradberry said. “Someone was acting on third-hand information.”
According to a news release from the sheriff’s department, the individual who made the threat has been detained and is undergoing a mental evaluation.
The sheriff’s department will continue to investigate the incident to determine if the actions warrant criminal charges.
