Tree celebrations planned to commemorate Arbor Day

ELKHART — Several events are planned to commemorate Arbor Day in Elkhart County.

Ÿ On Saturday, April 20, the town of Middlebury will partner with Jayco and InTerra Credit Union to plant 27 trees at S.R. 13 and U.S. 20. Volunteers should meet at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Middlebury Town Hall, 418 N. Main St., where there will be a brief ceremony honoring Arbor Day. ŸA free family festival to celebrate Arbor Day in Goshen will be from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Rieth Interpretive Center, 410 W. Plymouth Ave. Activities will include a food court, children’s crafts and activities, youth tree art contest display, information booths, a children’s choir performance and presentations of the Arbor Day Proclamation, Good Tree Steward Award and Tree City USA Award.

Ÿ The Nappanee Tree Board will celebrate Arbor Day on Friday, April 27, by planting a tree at Woodview Elementary, 800 E. Woodview Drive. The event will begin at 10 a.m. with a tree planting and the top three winners of a third grade Arbor Day essay contest will read their essays.

Ÿ The Elkhart Environmental Center and the city of Elkhart Forestry Division will host the city’s 25th annual Arbor Day celebration at the Elkhart Environmental Center, 1717 E. Lusher Ave., from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 27. The event will include a new visitor education area on the impact of the emerald ash borer, a traveling urban wood furniture exhibit, live log milling, free trees and refreshments from Olive Garden.
