Fundraiser April 13 for new girls mentoring program

A group of local women is working to start a mentoring program for Elkhart and Goshen girls and young women.

Ruth Williams and several friends are creating “God’s Extraordinarily Made Sisters” or “G.E.M.S.”

Williams has mentored before, including at women’s shelters, and said that she’s found that many young women have experiences or thoughts they want to get out, but are not comfortable telling their parents or teachers.

It’s important that they have someone else they know they can trust and be comfortable talking to, Williams said.

Williams said she has been talking with local principals about the program and has an agreement with The Worship Center, 60536 C.R. 113, Elkhart, to house the program there.

She and the other organizers plan to begin the program May 27, but are first working to gain support through a fundraising event April 13.

A fundraiser banquet from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, April 13, at The Sailor Center, 28070 C.R. 24, Elkhart, will include a buffet, gospel dancers, a raffle and a talk about the program and its goals.

Tickets are on sale for $15 and can be purchased at the door.
