ELKHART — Crews from six fire departments were called to battle a brush fire along the south side of the Indiana Toll Road Monday evening.

The Osolo Township Fire Department was assisted by crews from Bristol, Cleveland Township, Concord Township, Clay Township (St. Joseph County) and Porter Township (Cass County, Mich.).

The fire caused the closure of the right eastbound lane and slowed traffic. Indiana State Police assisted with traffic control.

A passerby on the toll road reported the fire at 4:41 p.m. on Monday, April 1.

An Osolo Township firefighter said the blaze was about 1/2-mile long and about 1/4-mile deep. A total of 19 firefighters and 11 trucks were involved in the effort.

Crews were able to extinguish the fire and cleared the scene at 6:51 p.m.

The cause of the fire was undetermined Monday evening.
