Elkhart Memorial High School Guidance Office news
ELKHART — Elkhart Memorial guidance counselors are currently scheduling sophomores for their junior year. The staff will be meeting with them on a daily basis until Wednesday, March 13. Some of the classes that students can take during their junior year include Advanced Placement courses such as English Literature & Composition, U.S. History, Statistics & Probability, Art, and Music Theory. Other college level courses include Advanced College Project (ACP) through Indiana University. Juniors can take ACP Macro and Micro Economics and/or ACP Personal Finance.
The junior year is also the first opportunity for students to attend the Elkhart Area Career Center located next to the high school. Students who attend the Career Center have the opportunity once again to earn college credit and industry recognized certifications. Applications for the Career Center are due Friday, March 15. Students can sign up with their counselor. If students/parents have questions about any of the processes involved in scheduling for the junior year, do not hesitate to contact the EMHS guidance office at 574-262-5628.
In addition to scheduling the sophomores, the guidance counselors will be meeting with all of the sophomore English classes in a computer lab to set up MyCollegeQuickStart through the College Board. This free program will utilize the PSAT scores the sophomores just received this past December. Students will be able to set up an account that helps them study for the SAT, take career interest inventories, set up a college/four-year plan, and browse through colleges that might interest them. This website will also aid the students when they are ready to register for their SAT’s as juniors. The counselors will be presenting this material from Monday, March 25 to Thursday, March 28. For questions about MyCollegeQuickStart, please contact the EMHS guidance office at 574-262-5628.
The month of March is the time for Elkhart Memorial students to sign up to take their Advanced Placement exams that will occur in May 2013. There is a cost involved for some students. Students who are on a free/reduced lunch do not have to pay for any exams. Students who are on a full pay must pay for their English, Social Studies, Art, and Music Theory exams. All students enrolled in AP Math or Science will receive their test free of charge. For students who have to pay full price, tests usually run about $90 per subject. Students will have until Friday, March 22 to sign up for their exams. Questions about this process should be referred to the AP Coordinator, Allison Makowski at 574-262-5627.
Freshman scheduling for the sophomore year will begin on Monday, March 18 and run into the last week of March. There will be two class meetings for freshmen, one at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 12 and one at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 14. The counselors will explain the scheduling process to all freshmen at these meetings. Students will be able to find out exactly when their appointment is on March 14 on the guidance office window at Elkhart Memorial Guidance.
