ELKHART — The National Weather Service has extended a lake effect snow advisory until 7 p.m. today, Jan. 22.

According to the NWS, there may be a period of diminished intensity and coverage but lake effect snow showers are expected to continue into this evening across parts of northern Indiana and much of south Michigan.

Accumulations of 1 to 2 inches of snow are expected Tuesday with additional light accumulations expected overnight.

Cold temperatures and the snow could make for hazardous road conditions across northeastern LaPorte, western St. Joseph, Cass and Elkhart counties.

Temperatures will remain in the single digits into Tuesday night with gusty west winds that will keep wind chill values between minus-7 and minus-12 degrees.

Although the weather service reports that a wind chill advisory expired at 11 a.m., Accuweather says moderate cold weather — with lower-than-average temperatures — will remain in place into Sunday.

Temperatures may approach levels not reached in the past two to four years in a number of locations by the middle of the week from the upper Midwest into the Northeast, reports Accuweather.
