GOSHEN — Ice carving, fire dancing and a chili competition will all be featured at Goshen’s sixth annual Fire and Ice Festival this weekend as part of Downtown Goshen Inc.’s January First Fridays.
The festival begins Friday with members of the Michiana Ice Carvers Association (MICA) carving sculptures out of 300-pound blocks of ice in front of downtown stores. First Friday participants can watch the blocks take shape as they shop at downtown businesses offering special holiday deals.
Fire dancers from Pyrotation Nation will also be on hand, performing around the downtown area.
Beginning at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Goshen City Church of the Brethren will join the festivities, offering free chili and music from the Boomer Boys. The church will also have desserts available at a cost, to help the church’s young adults raise money to travel to the Brethren Annual Conference.
Warming stations will be set up throughout the downtown area, providing warmth for festival-goers as they take in the icy creations. The warming stations on East Washington Street will also offer free marshmallows for roasting.
As a conclusion to the evening, a 16-block ice tower surrounding a large bonfire will be lit at 7 p.m. The tower is expected to burn for several hours as the ice slowly melts.
The festival continues Saturday with the ice carving competition.
The competition begins at 10 a.m., as contestants work with larger blocks of ice to create elaborate sculptures to be judged for cash prizes. The competition ends at 1 p.m. with winners to be announced around 2 p.m.
A chili contest will take place as well on Saturday, beginning at 11 a.m. Free tickets will be available Saturday morning at the Goshen Theater, 216 S. Main St.
Businesses participating in the competition include the Constant Spring, The Electric Brew, Elks Lodge 768, Maple City Market, Mattern’s Butcher Shop and Corner Deli, Rachel’s Bread and San Marcos.
Judging will take place until the contest concludes at 1 p.m. Tickets are required for participation in the chili contest.
