GOSHEN Council will not meet for Dec. 31session

Goshen will not have an extra council meeting Monday, Dec. 31

Goshen city council will not meet Monday, Dec. 31, for an extra meeting to complete redistricting.

The extra meeting had been scheduled for 5:30 Monday in case Mayor Allan Kauffman heard from the state that there would be sanctions against the council for not passing an ordinance establishing council voting districts by Jan. 1.

Contacts at the Indiana Association of Cities and Towns told Kauffman they were not able to determine that a sanction would likely be imposed, had not heard of such sanctions being imposed and would not know what state office would impose such a sanction.

The council will resume the redistricting discussions at a future meeting.

Deschene has lost another round in a language fluency dispute, all but ending his bid for office. The tribe's high court on Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2014, upheld a ruling from a lower court that said Deschene is not qualified to seek the top elected post because he doesn't speak fluent Navajo.
