12/12/12: “Very cool,” “the highest point of the energy wave” or just another day?
A good day to play bingo or get married?
The peak of an “energy wave”?
If you believe some of the hype, today — Dec. 12, 2012, or 12/12/12 — could be all of that and more. Then again, it may just be another day, albeit one with a lot of ones and twos.
Dave Richter, a lieutenant in the Elkhart Fire Department, plans to wed fiance Heather Labrum today at noon — 12 p.m. on 12/12/12. But while it’ll undoubtedly be a special day — they’ll wed 100 feet in the air in the bucket of a fire department ladder truck — he’s not attributing any sort of cosmic, mind-bending significance to the date. It’s just a distinctive day because of the numeric alliteration of the date.
“We’re not going to see it for another 100 years,” Richter said, alluding to the next recurrence of 12/12/12, on Dec. 12, 2112. “It’s unique being it’s the three twelves.”
Likewise, Jo Selman of Goshen, mother of Kassy Miller — who turns 12 today — doesn’t read too much into the date or the convergence of twelves. The day is “just a way to celebrate something special for her,” Selman said.
Kassy, a sixth-grader at Bethany Christian School in Goshen, says one of the good things about the day will be the snack — cookies or cupcakes — her mother will be able to bring in for her and her classmates to mark the day.
Kassy’s friends are “just, like, ‘Wow, that’s amazing. I wish my birthday was then,’” she said.
As on Nov. 11, 2011 — 11/11/11 — and other alliterative dates,12/12/12 is getting plenty attention from mystic types and others around the globe who see the day as more than just an array of numbers.
The San Manuel Indian Bingo and Casino in Highland, Calif., suggests it may be a good day to play bingo. “Feeling lucky? Superstitious? Carefree? Well then be here and play bingo with us on 12/12/12,” says its website. “It could just be your luckiest day of the month or this year.”
The Viva Las Vegas Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas, Nev., is offering several Elvis Presley-themed wedding specials, including the $312.12-priced Hound Dog 12-12-12 Wedding Package, which includes a song sung by the King.
“The charismatic and fun-loving couple that gets married on a 12 day is lucky and balanced, but seeking constant goals to achieve,” says the chapel’s website. “The ‘go-getting’ 1 and the ‘sensitive’ 2 make this a very balanced number.”
Some mystic types are sponsoring a three-day seminar in Scottsdale, Ariz. — 12-12-12 Beyond the Prophecies — as a way of channeling the energy of the day.
“All of humanity is stepping into a new age and a new energy. It may not happen for each individual on an exact date or time but the highest point of the energy wave will crest on the 12-12-12 at twelve minutes past noon,” says the website for the seminar. “This is a man made wave of energy that spirits all over the planet have been building.”
Back in Goshen, Kassy doesn’t employ such sweeping drama in describing the day. She’s just excited about presents, her friends, the fun and the fact that it’s a uniquely numbered day.
“In my opinion, I think it’s just, like, very cool,” she said.
Fireworks tonight in Elkhart
Alice Martin and her family celebrated on 10-10-10 and 11-11-11, but tonight’s get together will be different.
Tonight the Martins will celebrate the odd date -— and the marriage of their daughter, Alexis — with a large fireworks celebration in downtown Elkhart tonight.
Fireworks are expected to begin at 8 p.m. The public is invited to gather near by NIBCO Water and Ice Park and the downtown plaza and Central Park.
“I’m just intrigued with the uniqueness of the dates and I think we’re all lucky to be alive right now and experience the new millennium and experience these really interesting dates,” Martin said.
