Local Families can still apply for Holiday assistance
ELKHART — Families who didn’t meet the deadline to file an application for the Adopt-a-Family Christmas program still have an option.
The Salvation Army in Elkhart has partnered with Guidance Ministries to help as many families as they can.
Though the deadline to apply for assistance was Monday, Dec. 3, families can still go to Guidance Ministries to apply for help there.
The deadline to apply through Guidance Ministries is Dec. 13. Families with children 14 and up can apply at Guidance Ministries. The Rev. Lori King, CEO of Guidance Ministries, said Toys-for-Tots and Adopt-a-Family have an age limit of 14. Guidance Ministries accepts donations of gifts for teenagers older than 14 as well.
King said since the deadline for the Elkhart Salvation Army, she has seen a number of families apply at Guidance Ministries. She said there is no limit to the number of families who can apply for the program through Guidance Ministries.
To apply, parents need to bring picture IDs for the adults in the household, proof of Elkhart County residency, proof of income, social security cards for all family members and birth certificates for all children.
King encouraged anyone in need to also apply for a food box, as well as clothes, which are part of other programs.
Applicants will be given a time and date to pick their gifts. King said the program must first verify that families are not duplicating their applications with other local programs.
The Goshen Salvation Army’s deadline for the Adopt-a-Family program was Friday, but families can still stop in at the Salvation Army’s toy shop this week. The shop will be open during regular hours, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m.
Only residents of Goshen, New Paris and Millersburg qualify to purchase at the Goshen Salvation Army Toy Shop.
