ELKHART — Next Wednesday’s unique date, 12/12/12, will be celebrated and punctuated in the skies above downtown Elkhart with a large fireworks display.

The Martin family, longtime owners of NIBCO Inc., is planning a large display that is scheduled to start at 8 p.m.

The NIBCO Water and Ice Park will be open for skating Wednesday night if weather conditions permit. Normal prices for admission and skate rentals will be in effect.

The Martins had planned the fireworks for Labor Day weekend, but that was postponed because of inclement weather.

Spectators wanting to come downtown to watch should be able to view it from the downtown plaza and to the north near the ice park.

The National Guard is deploying troops to the rural Hawaii town as lava makes a slow crawl toward a major road and threatens to further isolate the community that got its start during the lumber- and sugar-plantation heyday.
