NorthWood 6th, Fairfield 7th at ISSMA finals

INDIANAPOLIS — Goshen High School was second, Concord High School fifth and Northridge sixth in class B of the Indiana State School Music Association’s marching band state finals today, Nov. 3.

Earlier in the day, NorthWood High School finished sixth and Fairfield High School seventh in class C.

NorthWood Director Eric Criss said he couldn’t be more pleased with the Red Regiment’s performance.

“For the first time at finals for most of the band, I thought they handled the stress well,” he said, calling the performance “fantastic.”

He’s excited for the band to work to stretch into the top five in the state with next fall’s marching band season.

The state finals performance was a great way to finish off senior flutist Samantha Taylor’s career with NorthWood’s marching band.

Her first time at the state finals, she said she thought the day’s performance was NorthWood’s best of the season. When it came time for the awards ceremony, though, “honestly, I was kind of having an anxiety attack.”

It was a relief when the announcer finally named NorthWood’s placing, she said.

Andrew Muth, Fairfield’s director, was also happy with Fairfield’s performance.

“Today’s performance was wonderful,” he said. “We had a great week of performances, a great day here.”

Andy Beer, a freshman vibraphone player for Fairfield’s Marching Pride said the performance was probably one of their best of the season, but said he was disappointed the band didn’t place higher.

His personal goal of the day was to place his absolute best, “because I can’t control how other bands do,” he said, but added he hopes to improve their placing at state next year.

Penn is the one local class A band competing at state. Penn is set to perform at 8:45 p.m., with results at 9:50 p.m.
