Thousands of people came out and enjoyed activities at last year’s Octoberfest-themed First Friday. IU Health had a table set up on the courthouse lawn, and children and adults worked their creative magic together as they decorated miniature pumpkins. (Truth Photo By Mark Shephard) (Mark Shephard)

GOSHEN— Downtown Goshen Inc. will celebrate fall this weekend with their annual Oktoberfest-themed First Friday.

The event will compliment the turning leaves and corn stalk-festooned poles downtown with pumpkin decorating for kids and hay rides.

There will also be Oktoberfest Feats of Strength contests, including log sawing, arm wrestling, stein racing, nail hammering, an Oktoberfest belly competition and rope climbing.

And what would Oktoberfest be without the food?

The South Side Soda Shop will be serving sauerbraten and red cabbage and bratwurst with sauerkraut from 5 to 9 p.m. The DGI Beer Garden will also feature the Summet Oktoberfest Ale.

Other activities that will be offered this Friday include the Goshen College homecoming celebration from 6 to 9:30 p.m. on East Washington Street. The event will be highlighted by a concert from Lavender Jazz, the school’s ensemble that plays jazz and swing music directed by assistant professor of music Christopher Fashun. Swing dance lessons will also be offered during the band’s set.
