ELKHART — Fireworks in mid-September?
How about the biggest in the city’s history?
The opportunity in Elkhart arrives Friday night when a local family will celebrate a wedding with a large-scale fireworks display in downtown Elkhart.
And the public is invited.
The event is being planned by Rex and Alice Martin, who wanted to celebrate the marriage of their daughter, Alexis Martin, to Shawn Klose.
The display is scheduled to begin at 10 p.m.
The couple was married on Labor Day weekend and returned this week from a honeymoon.
The Martins own NIBCO Inc., and were integral in the formation of the NIBCO Water and Ice Park, which opened in 2007.
The Martins organized a public fireworks display when the park was dedicated and Alice Martin predicted Friday’s show will “be three times better.”
“My fireworks person has promised me these will be the best fireworks the city has ever seen,” Martin said.
Spectators are encouraged to gather around the NIBCO Parkway.
Craig Gibson, a family friend who helped plan the wedding, believes the fireworks would be visible from Central Park and many of the downtown restaurants.
Gibson represented the family Tuesday at the city’s board of works meeting and was granted permission for the show.
The fireworks will be launched from the old foundry property near Martin’s Super Market. Parts of NIBCO Parkway and Elkhart Avenue will be closed off for the event.
For the Martins, it’s the perfect chance to celebrate a wedding.
“When I think of celebrations, I think of fireworks,” Martin said.
“I hope it makes for a nice memorable time for the people of Elkhart,” she said.
