ELKHART — The Elkhart Salvation Army, 300 N. Main St., will begin accepting names Monday for Christmas assistance/Adopt a Family.

People may sign up for assistance from 9 to 11:45 a.m. or 1 to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, Nov. 7-11, or from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. or 4 to 7 p.m. Mondays Nov. 14, 21, 28 and Dec. 5.

People should bring the following information for all children in the household: Shirt/coat size, pants/dress size, shoe size and Christmas wish list.

In order to sign up, the Salvation Army requires an Indiana driver’s license or state ID card for proof of identification, along with Social Security cards for everyone in the household and birth certificates for all children ages 14 and younger.

For proof of income, those seeking assistance must provide payroll stubs; a printout of TANF and/or food stamp benefits; Social Security, SSI or SSDI; unemployment benefits information; utility rebate check stub; child support; and any other income not included in the other categories.

They also must provide proof of expenses — rent receipt, lease or mortgage information; utility bills; automobile expenses, including payments and insurance; medical bills; and any other expenses.

Income guidelines are not established for this program, according to Maj. Steven E. Woodard, officer for the Elkhart Corps.

“If you find that you are going to be in need for Christmas, please do not delay signing up for assistance,” Woodard said.

All families with children 14 or younger will receive a voucher to sign up for Toys for Tots and a letter to return to the Salvation Army on Dec. 19 to pick up a grocery gift certificate. Households with older children or no children will be eligible for a grocery gift certificate with proof of income.

Bristol residents will receive assistance through the Bristol Food Pantry, Woodard said. Applications for Christmas baskets and toys will be accepted on Thursdays Nov. 3, 10, 17 and Dec. 1 and 8, as well as Tuesday, Nov. 22. Hours each day will be 1 to 6:30 p.m. The same documentation will be required as at the Elkhart Salvation Army.

Anyone who has signed up for the Open Gates Nobody But Jesus program or Guidance Ministries will not be eligible for assistance through the Salvation Army program.

Those with questions may call Brenda Spence at 333-8959.
