ASSISTANCE

Agape Baptist Church Food Pantry, 248 W. Wolf Ave., is open from 6 to 8 p.m. the fourth Wednesday of each month. Information: the Rev. Dannel Brown, pastor, at 266-7670.

Augustana Lutheran Church, 1133 Kilbourn St. (one block north of Strong Avenue at Kilbourn and Pleasant streets) serves a meal from 5 to 6 p.m. every Monday for individuals and families who are unemployed or underemployed.

Christ’s Commissary Food Pantry is open from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. and 6 to 7:15 p.m. the first and third Thursday of each month. Clients may come every 30 days. Clothing and household goods are available whenever donated. The pantry is at First Brethren Church of Elkhart, 24197 C.R. 16 E. Church Without Walls, 731 Wagner Ave., food pantry/clothes closet open from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesdays and Thursdays. Clients may come once a month for food and weekly for clothing. For questions or concerns, clients may call the church at 293-0776 and ask for Felicia.

Clothed in Compassion, C.R. 6 at C.R. 19, Bristol, offers free clothing to men, women and children all ages/sizes. No paperwork to fill out. Available from 9 a.m. to noon the first and third Saturdays of the month. Located in the basement of the old Zion Lutheran Church building. Donations of clothing accepted as well, especially children’s clothing.

A free community breakfast is from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. the first Saturday of the month at the new Zion Lutheran Church, 20943 C.R. 6 (corner of C.R. 6 and C.R. 19), Bristol. Donations accepted.

Elkhart Community Senior Outreach site gives out canned food and clothing from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church, 802 W. Garfield Ave. Leave your name and phone number. Information: Mary at 293-6490.

St. James AME Church, 122 Dr. Martin Luther King Drive, has a food and clothing ministry. CONCERTS

Hubbard Hill Auxiliary’s Gospelfest will be from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, at Prairie Camp, 63526 C.R. 9 S., Goshen. Cost: $7 general admission, $5 senior citizens and students. Food and refreshments available for purchase. A festive variety of six gospel music groups for all to enjoy.

Dunlap United Methodist Church, 23674 U.S. 33, will again host the Chords Vocal Ensemble from Fort Wayne at the 10 a.m. worship service on Sunday, Sept. 8. The eight-member ensemble will present a special program of contemporary settings of traditional song and hymns. The ensemble is accompanied by acoustic piano, organ and bass guitar. FUNDRAISERS

Little Saints Day Care and St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Middlebury are planning a Care for Carmen Community Day from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8. The event will raise money to help pay medical bills for Carmen Yoder, a 4-year-old who became ill last spring and was diagnosed with encephalitis. She spent a month at Memorial Children’s Hospital in South Bend and two weeks at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis. Carmen is a student at Little Saints Day Care and her mother also teaches at the daycare. Carmen is recovering and still goes to rehabilitation three days a week. Detra Yoder, Carmen’s mother said, “It was only four months ago that Carmen was in ICU and they weren’t sure if she would survive. The doctors called her a miracle.” Care for Carmen Day will be at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 708 W. Wayne St., Middlebury. There will be bounce houses, games, prizes, a silent auction, bake sale, live music and fire trucks at the event. Pulled pork sandwiches, hot dogs and more will also be served. MEETINGS/INSTRUCTION

A Quiet Place Prayer Center on Waubee Lake in Milford is taking reservations for the fall Men and Women Creating Community groups. These groups meet once a month from September to May (none in January). This year’s topics for women are Celtic Spirituality, God’s Joy-Filled Surprises and Exploring Christian Formation Through the Arts. Men will be using Philip Yancey’s book “What Good Is God? Glory to Glory Fellowship will celebrate its first holy convocation during a week of activities at 7 p.m. Sept. 17-20. St. Mary’s Orthodox Church, 65159 C.R. 33, Goshen, will offer an icon painting workshop from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 10, 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 11, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Oct. 11 and 2 to 6 p.m. Oct. 13. Tuition is $350 per student, and serves as a fundraiser for St. Mary’s. Each participant will receive brushes, a prepared panel and all other materials (paint, 24K gold leaf, etc.) necessary to complete a 9-inch by 12-inch icon. Snacks and lunch on Saturday are included.

During this workshop, students will learn basic color mixing and painting techniques, be instructed in the history and theology of the icon, and receive personal instruction and demonstration for each stage of painting. No artistic experience is necessary.

Students are required to make a $100 non-refundable deposit to reserve their space. Space is limited. If the workshop fills, a waiting list will be started.
