March 28, 2004: Jimtown beats Brownstown for 2A title

The front page of the sports section on this March day commemorates a historic night for the Jimtown High School boys basketball team.

The Jimmies had just won the state championship game 63-59 over Brownstown Central, making it the first Elkhart County boys basketball team ever to win a state title. A quote in the story from Coach Randy DeShone says his hope when he took the job 13 years earlier was merely to win a sectional game. The team was widely considered an underdog at the time, after over a decade’s worth of losing seasons—which made the 2004 state championship victory all the sweeter.

Visit our History in Headlines project for video interviews with DeShone and the three star players of the game, Kyle Johnson, Derrick DeShone and Tyler Leighton, as they reflect on that day 10 years later.
