Winter weather is the great equalizer

Do you know someone who's not affected by bad weather? I did, until recently.

Posted on Feb. 5, 2014 at 4:40 p.m.

Nobody's happy about this winter's crazy weather. Even those people who get excited about fresh snowfall ("But it's so pretty!") are starting to look just as grumpy as everyone else.

My husband is never affected by weather. When it snows, he mumbles under his breath, kicks his truck into four wheel drive, and goes on with his day.

That all changed this past weekend, when he slipped on ice and totally bit it in a grocery store parking lot. I honestly wish that I could share with you the instant replay that's been going through my mind ever since this happened, because it is SO FUNNY.

Lest you judge, I'll add that I was pretty concerned when I saw him fall. But I could tell from the way he was acting that he was more embarrassed than hurt. So my next move was to laugh at him.

The best thing about this is that while he was still laying on the ground, trying to decide if anything was broken, a little kid nearby gleefully called out, "That's why you don't run on ice!"

Now my husband is in the same class as the rest of us: Cold, angry, and worried that spring may never come.

Plus, he has been much more sympathetic to my typical winter habits, which include driving at a steady clip of about 5 mph at the first sign of a snowflake.

It's nice to live with someone who understands that winter weather should be respected. I'm sorry it took an icy fall to do it. I'm definitely glad he wasn't hurt.
