Registration is open for the American Heart Association’s Heart/Stroke Walk and 5K Run events planned for September in Elkhart and St. Joseph counties.

The event is a non-competitive three mile walk and a 5K run with the goal of raising money to be used for heart disease and stroke research and programs in the area, a news release from the AHA stated. The funds raised during the events are invested back into the Michiana area.

There will also be a health festival that includes food, games, giveaways, entertainment and information about heart disease and stroke.

"It’s essential for a lot of people to understand that heart disease and stroke can strike at any age and the goal of the heart walk is to bring more awareness and save lives,” Shelley Rody, chair of the Elkhart County walk, said.

The Elkhart County event is planned for 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 21, at Island Park and Riverwalk in Elkhart. The St. Joseph County event is planned for 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, at Eddy Street Commons across from Notre Dame.

Several national and local organizations sponsor the event, including The Elkhart Truth and Truth Radio 1340.

Registration is available online. For more information, call 574-274-1783.
