Heartland Small Animal Rescue
Heartland Small Animal Rescue, Inc. is a non-profit, 501(c)3 rescue based in South Bend, Indiana.

We focus our rescue efforts on companion animals that are scheduled for euthanasia in local shelters. We foster many different types of animals such as dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, gerbils, hamsters, hedgehogs, and reptiles.

We rely on a network of volunteers and fosters to provide love and care to our animals until they find forever homes.

National Adoption Weekend gives animals the chance to find homes

Over 90 of Heartland Small Animal Rescue's pets were adopted during the event last year – who knows how many could find their forever homes this year?

“Until they all have a home.”

That’s a popular saying in the rescue world. We understand the big picture – it is estimated that between 3 and 4 million dogs and cats are euthanized every year in the United States. That isn’t a statistic we can focus on, though. Instead, we try to save the animals that are sitting in front of us right now. We nurse them back to health, we teach them basic obedience and how to trust humans, we feed and love them and we find them forever homes.

A huge part of finding a dog, cat or other small animal a home is their attendance at adoption events. Luckily, PetSmart Charities makes this possible for our rescue animals. Each weekend we are welcomed into the local PetSmart locations so the public can meet our animals. We have witnessed so many instant and wonderful connections at these adoption events.

PetSmart Charities also hosts National Adoption Weekends. These are special weekends. PetSmart Charities advertises these events nationwide. The majority of our animals attend so this is the chance to meet those that don’t attend on normal weekends. We often have special gifts and other fun things planned. The next National Adoption Weekend is May 3 through May 4.

We had an amazing spring National Adoption Weekend last year. Over 90 animals were adopted from our rescue alone. That means 90 animals that did not have homes of their own found forever homes in just one weekend! That is a number to be proud of.

One of the largest challenges we face is that many people still do not know that Heartland exists and that we adopt dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, hamsters and more! There are some who do not realize there are other options than buying a pet from a pet store. And still more, have never heard of the National Adoption Weekends. So, networking on social media, blogs, etc., is the way to get the word out.

We would like to issue this challenge to you – tell two people about Heartland and the work we do and ask them to do the same. Let them know that there are hundreds of animals waiting for homes. Encourage them to attend the National Adoption Weekend on May 3 and May 4.

Perhaps, through this chain they all will have a home!
