Welcome to our new blog written by the volunteers of Heartland Small Animal Rescue serving the Michiana area. We rescue all types of companion animals (dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, hamsters, gerbils, hedgehogs and reptiles). Most of these animals stay in foster homes until they are adopted and move into their forever homes.
We are often asked what we rescue these animals from. The majority are facing euthanasia at a shelter. Some are slated to death because of their breed or age. Often though, the shelters are simply too crowded to save all the animals that are brought to them. We have also taken in animals from hoarding and abuse cases. We take in sick, untrained and unloved animals from all types of situations.
Our unique foster home system helps us determine which animal fits best with each adopter. The animals live with our fosters and interact with them daily. So, we know if they are house trained, if they like other animals, how gentle they are with children and so much more! We are also able to start training the animals in basic obedience, manners and what it is like to be a pet.
In future blogs, we plan to bring you stories of our rescued animals, tips to train and keep your pets safe, fun information about having a pet in your family, information about adopting and fostering, news about upcoming events and ways you can help animals in need.
You can view all of our adoptable animals on our website: www.heartlandsmallanimalresue.org and you can see some of the animals at our adoption events that take place at the PetSmart in South Bend on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and at the PetSmart in Mishawaka on Saturdays from 11 to 3.
We hope you enjoy our Tails from the Heart!
